Nevada City
We took a day trip to Nevada City and had a great time exploring! It’s a cute little town and we found plenty to do. Nevada City is a Historic District gold rush town off Highway 49 on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada’s. With our focus on food, wine & fun gift shops, we wandered into some great finds.
Nevada City is one California’s best-preserved Gold Rush towns. The town is surrounded by forest, with Deer Creek flowing through the center of town. Some of the attractions include the Minters Foundry Cultural Center, the Historic Firehouse No. 1 Museum, Historic Firehouse No. 2, the Nevada Theatre, and the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum, to name just a few.
There are a lot of wineries in this area, and some in downtown Nevada City. One of our first stops was the Clavey Vineyards Tasting room, where we enjoyed some great wines and a wonderful cheese plate. The atmosphere was wonderful, the service great. Our server was very knowledgeable. We enjoyed tasting their reds – and came home with a couple of bottles to enjoy with dinner that evening. They are long gone and I can’t remember which ones we chose. Will have to go back and try again! We really enjoyed it!
Chocolate
Then we were on a mission to satisfy our sweet tooth. We stocked up on a few of our favorite sweets at the Nevada City Chocolate Shoppe. And they made John very happy with their selection of sugar-free chocolates. Thank you!! They went well with the wine we picked up in town.
Wine
Then we went on a search for Nevada City Winery. I remembered they had good wines – we used to sell them in the Discover California wine bar and in the store in Old Sacramento. We were looking for a good Port for after dinner. Nevada City Winery had one – and we all enjoyed it. A nice 2016 Dulcinea. Dulcinea is rich, full, and deep ruby red with complex chocolate and plum flavors. This fortified wine is the perfect finale for a satisfying meal and will pair beautifully with fruit, bittersweet chocolate, and rich cheeses. We of course chose to pair it with chocolate!
And that was our Discover California adventure that weekend!
