Discover California Wine in the Sierra Foothills

One of my favorite areas to visit (and go wine tasting) is to visit one of the many Sierra Foothills wineries in the Sierra Foothills wine region, comprising of Placer, Nevada, El Dorado, Calaveras, and Amador counties.  It’s so close to home and has great scenery!  There are over 100 wineries in this area that serve up wines of abundant flavor and variety. The Sierra Foothills is the epicenter of the California Gold Rush, and wine grapes were introduced to the area in the nineteenth century during that time.  And there are several fun little towns in the area serving as reminders of the Wild West…with fun shopping too!  The region is known for its Zin’s but offers many other delicious varieties including Syrah, Barbara, Tempranillos & Viogniers just to name a few.

What I like best about the foothills is that these are smaller, family-owned wineries (for the most part).  You can sit & visit with the owner and or winemaker, and feel at home.  Not big corporate tour-type wineries.

Some of my Sierra Foothills wineries – Twisted Oak, Scott Harvey, Youngs, Bella Grace (great olive oils too).  There are many more, but these are my “must stop” wineries.

You can taste quite a few wineries from Amador County in the town of Sutter Creek.  Just wander down the street and find your favorite Sierra Foothills wineries!

    One-Stop Wine Tasting in Murphys

    Murphy’s

My favorite “one-stop wine tasting” is the town of Murphys.  There are now has over two dozen family-owned and operated boutique wineries, all of which welcome visitors year-round for wine tasting and/or tours. Many of these wineries have tasting rooms right on Main St., within comfortable strolling distance of one another.  It’s a fun way to spend the day trying a variety of wines.

Take a picnic, spend the day wandering any of these wine areas, and find your new favorite.
