Russian River Area
We took a trip with our friends was to the Russian River area. We needed a few more days here to see and do everything – but alas, it was just a 3-day weekend trip. But we made the most of our time!
Sonoma Coast
On our first day, we took off from the Russian River area and headed up Hwy 1 for a drive up to Irish Beach. It was a beautiful day and thoroughly enjoyed the drive. We stopped for lunch in Jenner on a patio right on the ocean on the Sonoma Coast. It is a lovely place called the Coast Kitchen at Timber Cove Resort. Great burgers – pricey but good, and we couldn’t beat the view!
Duncan Mills on the Russian River
Our base this weekend was a private RV park in Duncans Mills called the Duncans Mills Camping Club, right on the
Russian River. We listened to their very informative and non-pressure sales pitch and then headed out for our adventure on Saturday. We like to travel to different areas, so buying into one club doesn’t make sense for us. But it was very nice, and everyone was friendly and helpful.
Armstrong Redwoods State Park
We took a trip to Armstrong Redwoods – a hidden treasure in that area. I grew up in the state park system in California and this is one I don’t remember ever visiting. Armstrong Redwoods is located in a canyon two miles north of the Russian River and the town of Guerneville. It was a beautiful drive through the park looking at the tall Coastal redwoods and lush ferns. Then we took the steep, narrow, one-lane windy road drive up to the Austin Creek State Recreation area campground – the view of the valley on the way up was beautiful!
Guerneville
We wandered downtown Guerneville and checked out a few of the local shops, but our mission on this day was to find ice cream – and find it we did! We found a very busy, but worth the wait ice cream store. Flavors Unlimited custom blends your ice cream with toppings – and it was VERY GOOD!
Duncan Mills Shopping
This very small town has a couple of little “shopping” areas within walking distance of the campsite.
The Duncans Mills General Store had great beef jerky – we were directed there by our great sales lady and she stated that all the meat was from their local ranch. There were a few other quaint stores in the area also Pig Alley was my favorite, but was disappointed that the wine bar closed at 5 pm on a Saturday.
Yes, another trip to the area needs to be scheduled to further explore this area.
