Loon Lake in California is a beautiful destination to discover when exploring the wonders of California.
Tucked way up in the middle of nowhere is a beautiful lake – Loon Lake in the El Dorado National Forest. This was our second time visiting this area. Last year the bees had taken over the area we stayed in – this year they were not a problem at all. Was able to spend lots of time outside, including hanging up our hammock.
Driving to Loon Lake
Loon Lake is located 23 miles east of Placerville on Highway 50 and 29 miles north on Ice House Road (Forest Road 3) on the south shore. It’s quite a drive, but worth it. We stayed in the RV area near the boat ramp and day-use area, which is a beautiful waterfront setting. Camping is “roughing it” with no electricity, water, or sewer hookups. We were blessed enough to have lakeside sites and had several siblings and their families join us. Camping is only $25/night here. And the other bonus … no cell service or internet 😊
Things to do at Loon Lake
There are lots of activities at Loon Lake including boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, horseback riding (there are several equestrian sites), and exploring off-road vehicle trails. John and his brother took the jeep on a little excursion on the Rubicon. The 18-mile Rubicon Jeep Trail begins just up the road. According to the website: An exciting stretch of the scenic, un-maintained, rocky road awaits off-road thrill-seekers. And for the less thrill-seeking, several people in our group took their kayaks around the lake.
The campground sits just west of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada
Mountains at an elevation of 6,500 feet, so while the days were nice and beautiful, the evenings cooled off quite a bit. The weather was lovely. Once again, a good time was had by all … except one of the kids in our group who fell off his scooter and broke his leg. But he was having a great time until then!
